New Zealand defeated Bangladesh by 5 wickets in the sixth match of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy to reach the semi-finals.
In the fourth match of Group A of the Champions Trophy 2025 played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh scored 236 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs, while New Zealand achieved the desired target for the loss of 5 wickets in the 47th over.
New Zealand batting
In pursuit of the target, New Zealand did not start the innings well and the first 2 wickets fell for just 15 runs, however, Richan Ravindra showed responsibility and scored a brilliant century and led the team to victory.
Openers Will Young scored 0, Devon Conway 30, Kane Williamson 5, after which Richin Ravindra made a crucial partnership of 129 runs with Tom Latham, Tom was dismissed after playing an innings of 55 runs.
However, Richin Ravindra remained steadfast and completed his fourth century of his career, he was dismissed for 112 runs off 105 balls with the help of a six and 12 fours. Glenn Phillips was unbeaten on 21 and captain Michael Bracewell was unbeaten on 11 runs.
For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed, Naheed Rana, Rashad Hossain and Mustafizur Rahman took one wicket each.
Bangladesh batting
Earlier, batting first at the invitation of New Zealand, Bangladeshi openers Najamul Hassan Shanto and Tanzeed Hasan gave the team a good start, but the middle order proved to be a complete failure.
Bangladesh’s first wicket fell in 8.2 overs for a total score of 45, opener Tanzeed Hasan was dismissed for 24 runs, and wickets continued to fall intermittently, Mehdi Hasan Miraz was dismissed for 13, Tohid Hardoi, 7, Mushfiqur Rahim 2, Mahmudullah for 4 runs.
However, the captain, along with Jakir Ali, moved the scoreboard forward and completed his half-century, Shanto was dismissed after playing 77 runs, while Jakir Ali played an innings of 45 runs. Rashad Hossain was dismissed for 26 and Taskin Ahmed for 10 runs.
Thus, the Bangladesh team, playing first, could only score 236 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the stipulated 50 overs and gave the Kiwis a target of 237 runs to win.
For New Zealand, Michael Bracewell took 4, Will O’Rourke 2, while Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson took one wicket each.
Match toss
In the fourth match of Group A played at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, New Zealand cricket team captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and decided to field first against Bangladesh.
Speaking after the toss, Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner confirmed 2 changes in his team, Kyle Jamieson has been included in place of Nathan Smith and Rachan Ravindra has been included in place of Daryl Mitchell in the middle order.
Mitchell Santner said that it may be better to bat on a very good wicket, we are playing very well, Rawalpindi is a different challenge.
On the other hand, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto said that he is not too worried about batting, Mahmudullah and fast bowler Naheed Rana have been included in the team in place of Soumya Sarkar and Tanzeem Hasan.
Regarding the fightback against India, the Bangladesh captain added, “The way we batted in the middle overs against a quality team, it gives us a lot of confidence.”
It should be noted that both teams are playing their second match in the tournament, New Zealand had defeated Pakistan in the first match, while Bangladesh had to face defeat at the hands of India in their first match.
If New Zealand defeats Bangladesh, Pakistan will be out of the semi-final race.
